What is it?
Most US acupuncturists treat patients on tables in individual cubicles. This is not traditional in Asia, where acupuncture usually occurs in a group setting, with treatments in recliners in a quiet, soothing, common room. Also, with this more traditional style, we spend less time talking and rely more on tongue and pulse diagnosis to decide the best course of treatment for you. We will place the needles in ‘distal points’ which are on your hands, elbows, knees, feet and head, therefore minimal disrobing will be required. This allows us to see more patients in an hour so that we can keep prices down for you.
Fee amount is based on your ability to pay.
Research indicates the best acupuncture results are obtained from treatments 1, 2, 3, or even 5 times per week depending on the health challenge. A sliding fee scale makes this affordable.
What are the Benefits?
As with any kind of intentional group endeavor, such as meditation or prayer, when you do something with other people it raises the energy for everyone. It’s the same with acupuncture: receiving treatment in a room with others raises the Qi dynamic and healing is enhanced. It’s also nice for friends and family to be able to come in together.
What is a typical visit like?
Instead of checking out after your treatment, we routinely take care of payment and scheduling follow-up appointments when you first arrive. This tends to keep the flow of the acupuncture treatment from being interrupted.
After a brief check-in conversation with Heidi, you will receive treatment in reclining chairs with 1-4 other patients sharing the treatment room. The quiet, soothing atmosphere in the community room exists because our patients create it by relaxing together. To help us maintain this oasis of calm, we ask that you please speak in whispers while in the office and do not socialize with others while you’re in the treatment room. If you would like to speak to Heidi one-on-one at any length, please schedule a private session or a telephone consult.
We will practice a style of acupuncture which mostly uses ‘distal’ points, which means Heidi will probably treat pain in your back by placing needles in your hands and feet. Also, with this more traditional style, we spend less time talking and rely more on tongue and pulse diagnosis to decide the best course of treatment. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing; we need to be able to access your elbows, hands, feet and knees. Tank tops and button down shirts are helpful, too. You may bring earplugs or headphones/CD if you wish.
We let you decide when you feel ‘done’ before Heidi removes the needles. (It’s really easy.) The ‘right’ amount of time will vary from patient to patient (20 minutes to 1 hour) and may vary for you from visit to visit. This can happen because we spend less time talking and more time getting to the heart of the session.
What is the cost?
This is a suggested guideline for determining what you can pay. Generally, the more frequent the visits, the lower the cost per treatment within a given week. No income verification is necessary.
The purpose of the sliding scale is to separate the issues of money and treatment. We want you to come in often enough to really get better and stay better! HOWEVER, we understand that everyone’s situation is different. You do not need to follow the income guidelines. You choose what you pay. If your case will need frequent or long-term treatment, we suggest you choose the lower end of the scale so you can complete treatment successfully. Our primary goal is to make acupuncture available to you and your family as often as you need it. The key to having fast response to treatments is to get the next treatment before all the symptoms come back. On your first visit, a course of treatment that is appropriate for you will be suggested. Acupuncture works best when it is done frequently and regularly. The purpose of our sliding scale is to help you make that commitment.
